Hangzhou GC Light Semiconductor Technology Co., Ltd. has recently completed its business registration updates, marking the successful closing of its Pre-A financing round. The round raised tens of millions of RMB through joint investment from Shanghai Sci-Tech Innovation Fund (上海科创基金), CASSTAR (中科创星), and Zhongying Venture Capital (中赢创投). The proceeds will primarily support product research and development and production capacity expansion, accelerating the company's commercialization of next-generation semiconductor laser sources.
Founded in May 2024, GC Light specializes in the development and manufacturing of single-mode and single-frequency semiconductor lasers. Its core R&D team comes from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, bringing extensive research experience in laser chip design, device fabrication, and packaging and integration. Addressing the urgent demand for high-performance light sources in strategic emerging markets such as advanced manufacturing, quantum technology, and biomedicine, the company focuses on photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) while developing single-frequency and single-mode semiconductor lasers to offer customers more cost-effective solutions.
PCSELs have attracted considerable industry attention as a next-generation semiconductor laser technology. Unlike conventional edge-emitting lasers, PCSELs use photonic crystal band-edge effects to achieve large-area single-mode oscillation, combining high power, low divergence, and high beam quality. They also inherently offer the two-dimensional integration advantages of surface-emitting devices. This technology has the potential to overcome the long-standing trade-off between laser power and beam quality, substantially reducing optical system complexity and overall equipment costs. PCSELs are therefore regarded as promising next-generation light sources for large-scale markets such as LiDAR, optical communications, and industrial processing.
Globally, PCSEL technology is now at a critical stage in its transition from laboratory research to commercial production. Companies that achieve mass production first could gain an early advantage in the next-generation light-source market. GC Light has established a systematic technology portfolio across key wavelengths including 940 nm, 976 nm, 1064 nm, and 1310 nm, overcoming core technical challenges in high-power single-mode operation and low-divergence output. Its PCSEL products have achieved continuous-wave output of 1 W at 940 nm and 200 mW at 1310 nm. The company expects to begin selling mass-produced chips in the fourth quarter of 2026, advancing from technology validation toward volume production.

Beyond PCSELs, GC Light also has core capabilities in narrow-linewidth semiconductor lasers. Its team has extensive experience in chip design and fabrication runs. The products can achieve sub-MHz linewidths and offer single-frequency operation, low noise, and stable frequency, with all components domestically sourced. They cover key atomic-physics wavelengths such as 780 nm and 852 nm—wavelengths important for quantum control and precision measurement.
These products primarily serve customers in quantum technology and are used in demanding applications such as quantum computing and quantum communications, atomic clocks, and precision time and frequency systems. They are core components supporting an independently controllable domestic supply chain for China's quantum technology sector.

GC Light's single-mode semiconductor lasers feature pure single-transverse-mode output, excellent beam quality, and stable power, providing clean, controllable beams for precision applications. The portfolio spans ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths from 266 to 1064 nm. These products primarily serve biomedical and advanced manufacturing customers in applications such as flow cytometry, ophthalmic treatment, biological testing, and semiconductor metrology and inspection, helping domestic high-end optical instruments reduce their dependence on imported light sources.

Quantum technology is a national strategic emerging industry, domestic substitution in biomedical and semiconductor inspection equipment is accelerating, and optical communications is experiencing rapid growth. Together, these high-growth downstream markets are driving demand for high-performance laser sources. The high-end semiconductor laser market has long been dominated by imported products, making supply-chain security and cost pressures increasingly important and creating an urgent need for domestic alternatives. GC Light's product portfolio, centered on PCSELs and complemented by single-frequency and single-mode lasers, is positioned to address this opportunity.
Following this financing round, GC Light will focus its investment on two priorities. In R&D, it will accelerate PCSEL mass production and expand its multi-wavelength product portfolio. In production, it will build scalable lines that meet high-reliability requirements, moving products from laboratory samples to stable, reliable commercial offerings and providing customers with consistent, sustained supply.
